This manicure resembles the legendary shoes right down to the details. They almost look like patent leather with lacquer.

Check out these taupe nails. When you flip them over, boom! That Louboutin red really pops. We love the accent nail that looks like it's covered in stardust. Overall, the rhinestones make these nails stand out like movie stars.

French Tips with Red Bottoms

French Tips with Red Bottoms

Guess what – you can do a French manicure with red bottoms. All you need is an opaque neutral polish, so the red doesn't peek through the top. The black sparkly glitter makes us think of ballroom dancing shoes, especially with the stiletto tip on the ring finger.

Short Nails with Red Bottoms

Yes, you can do red bottoms on short nails. The effect will be less dramatic, but this understated look is still sophisticated. It's the surprise you weren't expecting.

The different textures, like glossy, matte, and textured glitter, make this mani even more visually interesting.

How to Do Red Bottom Nails

Red bottom nails are easiest to create with nail tips or acrylics. It's also possible to do them with press-on nails, but it's tricky with natural nails.

Red Bottoms with Soft Gels

For example, you could start with soft gel tips like the ones below. They are transparent and pre-shaped, with nine different sizes for each fingertip for a perfect match. Choose from various styles like coffin, almond, oval, and square. Trim or file them, if you like, because they are lightweight, like a natural nail, but more durable.

If you use these soft gels, you’ll need Protein Bond & Primer, gel adhesive, and a nail lamp to apply.

  1. Choose the correct tip sizes and lay them out in order. It’s easiest to apply them to your dominant hand first.
  2. Prep the natural nails by trimming, filing, and buffing the surface. Cleanse the natural oil and debris.
  3. Brush on the primer and allow it to dry.
  4. Place a dot of adhesive on the underside of the nail tip and press it into place on the nail. Come down at about a 45° angle and squeeze the sides to match the shape of your fingertip. Cure the nail for 10 seconds in the nail lamp.
  5. Repeat the process until all 5 fingers have tips, then cure the whole hand for 60 seconds.

Now that the soft gels are in place, it’s time to create the red bottoms. Brush the top of the nail with your chosen red shade and cure it.

This sounds strange, doesn't it? If these are red bottom nails, shouldn't we be painting the bottoms? It's because the nails are transparent, which is a less messy method to get the same results. Plus, the fact that the red polish is on top and protected by the nail tip instead of being underneath and exposed means it will be more chip-resistant.

Now, paint the surface color on top of the red. It must be as opaque as possible so the red doesn't show through. We suggest LAVIS Super Black.

You might need two coats of a regular polish. And don’t forget to brush the free edges of the nail with this color to make the red pop even more.

Red Bottoms with Acrylics or Poly Gel

You can also build red bottom nails with red-colored acrylics or poly gel.

  1. Attach the molds to the fingertips.
  2. Form the extension and let it dry. Then, add a clear layer on top that you can paint a different color.
  3. Remember to paint the free edges of the nail so that the acrylic or poly gel doesn’t show.

Which Red?

We talked a lot about red, but which polish color is closest to Louboutin shoes? You could purchase the brand’s official polish for an exact match. It comes in a showy bottle that resembles the iconic stiletto.

Otherwise, you could choose a polish that looks as close as possible to the official Pantone shade number 18-1663TP, also known as carmine red. It looks like this:

However, anyone shopping online knows that colors look a little different depending on the web browser and what device you use to view them. Therefore, we thought we would suggest red polishes that come pretty close:

Other Underside Nail Art Ideas

As we mentioned, it's awkward to paint the nails' undersides. However, if you were doing red bottom nails with press-ons, that’s exactly what you would have to do because they aren’t transparent.

The advantage of press-on nails is that you'll use an adhesive that air-dries. Therefore, you can paint the fake nails before you apply them. You don't have to worry that the light from the nail lamp won't be able to penetrate and cure the polish.

Once you’ve tried red bottom nails and gotten compliments, you may want to branch out and try other colors or effects. For example, holographic chrome powder looks fabulous underneath nails. You could also experiment with glitter or rhinestones.
